All About the American Flag

flag programAll About the American Flag. Nov. 11, 1 – 2 p.m. in Urbandale. Free. All ages; the optional essay contest is for fifth graders and should be done at home.

Learn about the American flag: its history, significance, meaning, proper display, and treatment with a homeschool grandpa. He will use the American Legion interactive DVD, which will be available for check out afterward.

This can be a great lift-off point for fifth graders who want to enter the Legion’s essay contest (personal interpretation of what the United States flag represents to the student). Our homeschool grandpa writes:

“Our American Legion Post has set a reward for First Place of $50 and a Second Place of $25. Everyone who submits an essay will get a certificate. The State of Iowa winners will receive First Place $2,000; Second Place $1,500; and Third Place $1.000.”

Iowa is the only state where the American Legions offers this Essay contest.
