Speech Contest

Speech Contest.  Morning of April 13, 2012 in West Des Moines.

The topic for 2012 is “A time when volunteers made a difference.”

Students are asked to select a time in American history when individual have banded together to improve the quality of life. Participants should choose one volunteer project or volunteer-driven movement and discuss it in their speech.

In organizing their speeches, students can consider these questions:

What is a volunteerproject or movement that has made a tremendous impact? (Consider both small-scale community driven efforts and large national efforts.)

How has this volunteer effort positively impacted one or more people? And how does it continue to improve quality of life for people? (Consider lasting impact.)

Students can use the questions above to help formulate ideas, but they should not be limited by the list.

The speech is to be 3 – 5 minutes.

Online information for interested families can be found at the Modern Woodmen speech page.

I will have recognition prizes and participation certificates for contestants. Advancement is available for grades 5 – 8 if enough participation in our region is met.

Volunteer timers and judges are needed. Please let Julia know if you can assist in either capacity.
